Van Saun County Park is unusual in that a single loop gives you four or five genuinely different looks without a car ride between them. The carousel

The vintage carousel is the park's signature backdrop — rich color, whimsy, and a strong graphic frame. It draws families, so it's best early on a weekend morning or on a weekday evening when the crowd thins. Overcast days are actually a gift here, softening the painted detail without harsh shadows.

The Walden Pond area

The park's ponds are where we head for golden hour. The water picks up warm reflected light in the last hour before sunset, and the open sky over it means no harsh dappling. This is our default closing location for a Van Saun session.

The zoo perimeter paths

You don't need to go inside the Bergen County Zoo to use the wooded perimeter paths around it — they give a shaded, private, tree-framed look that's ideal at midday when open areas are too bright. It's a good opening location while we wait for the light to soften elsewhere.

The train and picnic groves

The small park train adds a playful, nostalgic element, and the picnic groves nearby offer even, dappled shade under mature trees. The groves are reliable in any season and especially forgiving on bright afternoons.

The gardens

The park's ornamental gardens peak in late spring and early summer with blooms, then again in October when the surrounding maples turn. Morning light through the plantings is soft and directional — one of the prettiest windows of the day here.

What to bring and wear

Van Saun rewards a little planning. Parking and crowds

The park has several lots, and the ones nearest the zoo and carousel fill first on warm weekends. We recommend arriving early and parking toward the quieter ends of the park, then walking in. Crowds are lightest on weekday evenings and early weekend mornings; midday weekends in summer are the busiest. Planning the session at the edges of the day solves both the crowd and the light in one move.
